The Project Implementation Committee under the Chairmanship of Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf of the International Court of Justice supervises all staff. The Committee will continue to provide general supervision and guidance until a scientific Curatorium is constituted.
The Project Coordinator is Ambassador Sani L. Mohammed, founder and first Executive Director, International Law Institute – Nigeria. Amb. Mohammed is a lawyer and a diplomat, a former Nigerian Federal Permanent Secretary. He is assisted by volunteer scholars and practitioners as well as by a small core staff seconded to the Institute by the Government of the Federal Republic of Tanzania.
The Curatorium, once constituted, will consist of well-known international lawyers from Africa and outside the Continent. This body of highly specialized individuals will be responsible for the elaboration of the academic programmes of the AIIL and its overall strategic direction. There will also be a Rector who shall be the chief executive officer and the academic head of the Institute. He/she shall be in charge of the academic, administrative and financial management as well as the development of the Institute. The Institute will also have an Administrative Board which will be responsible for its day-to-day management and budgetary process. The Administrative Board will be assisted by a small group of staff members based at the headquarters in Arusha.
